15-year old Girl Rescues Five from Drowning
Patna: Sept. 13, 2007
True heroes, though rare these days, come in all shapes and sizes.
On Thursday, a boat carrying nearly a dozen people including some children and a woman, and two motorcycles, turned over in Panar River under Bayasi block in Purnia district dumping all passengers in the water.
While some people were able to swim back to safety, a woman and three children who could not swim were swept away in the current.
As if from nowhere, a 15-year old girl with the swimming skills of a mermaid, jumped into the water and systematically rescued the three children, the woman, and a obese man several kilograms heavier than her.
One after another, the girl who was identified as Farzana, rescued all five persons as dozens of villagers simply stood still seeing the rescue drama unfold.
Senior police officials and local leaders arrived at the scene and rewarded the girl who lives with her family at the bank of the river.
Farzana grew up near the water and learnt to swim at a very early age, the villagers said.
Thanks to her heroics, not one person was drowned in today's incident.
Extra weight added on the boat by the two motorcycles is believed to be the cause of the accident, the police said.
