JD-U MLA Attacked in Hajipur; to Resign on Friday
Patna: Sept. 13, 2007
Angry villagers in Hajipur on Thursday hurled stones and bricks and fired at the caravan of Janata Dal (U) legislator Munna Shukla when he was visiting the area to oversee flood relief and road repair work at Isopur village under Lalpur block.
Though no one was said to be hurt in the incident, an upset Shukla lashed out at his own government and announced his decision to resign from the membership of Bihar Assembly saying the entire state was in the clutches of bureaucrats, an allegation often made against the Nitish-led NDA government.
As reported, hundreds of villagers chanting anti-Shukla slogans threw stones and other objects at the legislator. Sources said the hostile reaction was due to the police case recently filed against over 50 villagers for cutting off the road in Isopur in a sign of protest against slow relief operation.
Shukla said he would tender his resignation on Friday since he had failed to live up to the expectations of the people of his constituency.
"I repeatedly asked the authorities to expedite repair work on the Gandak embankment that has suffered serious damage during this year's flood but the bureaucrats in power have chosen to ignore my requests that led to today's attack on my life," Shukla said.
Ten persons were named in an FIR following the Thursday incident while the police also lodged cases against two hundred unidentified villagers, reports said.
