Close on the heels of the recent cases of mob justice in Bhagalpur and Nawada, ten thieves in Vaishali district on Wednesday morning, were caught and lynched by the an angry mob resulting in the death of all ten criminals while leaving another battling for his life.
The incident took place in Dhelphorwa village under Rajapakar police station on early Thursday morning.
As reported, the thieves who had been breaking into villagers' homes for last several months were trying to escape in an auto-rickshaw after committing burglary in the house of Sitaram Singh. Their luck, however, ran out when more than 2,000 people chased them. Once caught, they were mercilessly beaten resulting in the death of 10 of the 12 thieves, the police said.
While one was listed in a critical condition at a local hospital, a 12th member of the gang managed to evade the raging crowd, the police said.
All the criminals are believed to be the residents of Samastipur district and belonging to the 'Kuderi' community, a nomad-like society usually involved in extracting honey from the bee-hives, the police said.
Situation remains tense in the area where senior police officials are said to be monitoring all activities.
The incident was widely condemned by political leaders including Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who said the crowd must not play the role of judge, jury, and the executioner. He also ordered a high-level probe to bring the guilty parties to justice.
Seizing the opportunity, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav condemned the Nitish government saying law and order had completely collapsed under the NDA government and demanded the Chief Minister's resignation on moral grounds.
Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party chief Ram Vilas Paswan also described the incident as brutal and gruesome with no law in the state to control such mob justice.
Earlier in Bhagalpur, two police officers tied a petty chain snatcher to a motorcycle and allegedly dragged him several feet leaving him covered in his own blood. A week later, three motorcycle thieves were either blinded or partially blinded by alleged Maoists in Nawada.
