Teej Celebrated in Patna
Patna: Sept. 14, 2007
Married Hindu women in Patna on Friday observed Hartalika Teej with great enthusiasm while wishing and praying for their long marital life by fasting for 24 hours that also included no water for that entire period.
All the Shiv temples in Patna witnessed heavy crowd throughout the day as women wearing red saris started to arrive at the temples as early as 5:00 am to offer 'gangajal' on the Shiv Ling.
It is believed that by fasting on Teej, the couples will have a longer, happier conjugal life.
The practice of Teej goes as far back as in Hindu mythology when Goddess Parvati observed a total fast in the hope of having Lord Shiva as her husband. As the story goes, Lord Shiva, impressed by Parvati's devotion, took her as his wife and never wavered in his duty as her husband.
The fast is broken after 24 hours, usually early morning next day, after the wife accepts water from her husband's hand.
