Shape up or Ship out; CM to State Police
Patna: Sept. 15, 2007
Following a high-level meeting between the Chief Minister and state's top cops on Saturday to review crime situation in Bihar, Nitish Kumar, in no uncertain terms, told the officials to straighten up their acts. "Enough is enough. You have 90 days to show results and then be prepared to face the consequences," he said.
"We don't need inept policemen who are constantly busy in factional politics within the police department than fighting crime in the state. If positive results are not shown by you in three months, prepare yourself to face the music," the Chief Minister said at the meeting that lasted over 4 hours.
Kumar approved a complete overhaul of the police department where officers of all ranks including the ASI, inspector, and DSP will be transferred after two years of service in the same place to prevent developing nexus with criminals and to keep the cops on their toes.
The Chief Minister further directed all Superintendents of Police (SPs) to work in close cooperation with the Additional Director General of the CID and if the crime situation still did not improve in their areas, departmental actions would be taken against them.
Home Secretary Afzal Amanullah, Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Ashish Ranjan Sinha, Chief Secretary A.K. Chowdhary, Additional Director General of Police (headquarters) Abhyanand and IG (headquarters) Anil Kumar Sinha, besides other top officials, were present at the meeting.
Kumar also expressed his concerns over sluggishness in the so-called speedy trials in the state. Ordering the DIGs and circle inspectors to speed up trials in their districts, he said they would be held responsible if goals were not achieved within a reasonable time.
