Vehicle, Helmet Check Leads to Dissent among Lawyers

Crackdown on illegal drivers. Photo by Shashi UttamThe district administration on Saturday, during its massive campaign against drivers without proper documents and helmets, seized several vehicles while collecting over Rs. 5 lakh in fines from the offending drivers.

The crackdown that continued from early morning to late evening in many areas of the state capital including between Saguna Mor in Danapur to Gandhi Setu in Patna and between Phulwarisharif and Boring Road crossing, over 2,000 vehicles were apprehended in the lack of officials documents pertaining to the ownership of the vehicles and missing helmets of the two-wheelers.

Vehicles of those who were not able to pay the fine were seized by the police.

Meanwhile, angry by the police road block, hundreds of people, including many lawyers, staged a protest near Kargil Chowk accusing Patna police of harassing innocent commuters for no valid reason.

When talks between the protestors and police failed, the police resorted to mild lathi-charge to disperse the crowd.

Later, the lawyers filed a complaint against the police with the court naming the ADM and Traffic DSP as accused in the case and also took up their case with the district bar association demanding actions against the traffic police.
