Lynched Men Likely Not Thieves; Says Police
Patna: Sept. 15, 2007
The state police, following a high-level meeting with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday, said the ten men who were earlier lynched by villagers in Vaishali district did not appear to be thieves as reported previously and appropriate legal actions would be taken against those who were found guilty of killing them.
Ordering a CID probe into the lynching case, Bihar Home Secretary Afzal Amanullah said irregularities were found in the DSP's report that led to the suspicion that the ten men who belonged to the poorest of the poor class were thieves.
"A preliminary report by a probe panel led by IG Anil Kumar Sinha, however, suggests otherwise. If the CID's report confirms the IGs findings, actions would be taken against the erring officials as well as all those who were involved in the lynching process," Amanullah said.
The latest twist in the case came as a surprise to many particularly in view of the fact that the sole survivor in the lynching incident, Ranjit Kureri, admitted of committing burglary in the house of Sitaram Singh and the police also recovered some of the stolen items from the crime scene.
The big question for the CID probing team, however, remains why the ten men were murdered by the raging mob if they were not the thieves as believed previously.
