Clash in Bhagalpur during Bandh Sponsored by the Opposition

Bhagalpur: Sept. 18, 2007

Congress meeting following Bhagalpur bandh. Photo by Shashi UttamThe police in Bhagalpur, on Tuesday, arrested over 40 Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) leaders and activists during the day-long bandh co-sponsored by all three parties to protest against the alleged beating of a youth Congress leader in Bhagalpur, prolonged power cuts, and police cases against some media-men.

Forcing shop owners to down their shutters and damaging vehicles that came in their way, the protestors went on a rampage pelting law-enforcement officials with bricks and stones.

Offices, though opened, witnessed low attendance while all the schools and colleges were ordered closed in anticipation of a violence breakout.

Among the arrested persons were also 19 women. All of them, however, were later released at their own cognizance.
