Clash in Bhagalpur during Bandh Sponsored by the Opposition
Bhagalpur: Sept. 18, 2007
The police in Bhagalpur, on Tuesday, arrested over 40 Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) leaders and activists during the day-long bandh co-sponsored by all three parties to protest against the alleged beating of a youth Congress leader in Bhagalpur, prolonged power cuts, and police cases against some media-men.
Forcing shop owners to down their shutters and damaging vehicles that came in their way, the protestors went on a rampage pelting law-enforcement officials with bricks and stones.
Offices, though opened, witnessed low attendance while all the schools and colleges were ordered closed in anticipation of a violence breakout.
Among the arrested persons were also 19 women. All of them, however, were later released at their own cognizance.
