IG Submits his Report; Lynched Men were not Thieves
Patna: Sept. 18, 2007
Anil Sinha, IG (Headquarters) on Tuesday, in his report to the state government on the brutal killings of ten men at Rajapakar in Vaishali district last Thursday, concluded the victims were not thieves as earlier reported and the carnage was a direct result of the failure of the Vaishali administration.
Calling the shocking incident a clear case of administrative negligence that could have been prevented had the police acted promptly, Sinha, who handed over the report to the Director General of Police (DGP) Ashish Ranjan Sinha, said he did not find any indication of the victims being thieves as alleged by their killers and later picked up by the police and the media.
The men were returning from a feast when they tried to pick up an auto-rickshaw and got involved in an argument over the fare. This led to screaming and shouting that attracted a mob which mercilessly beat up the ten until all were dead, the IG is reported to have said in his investigative report.
The government now awaits the report from the CID which is expected to be turned in by the end of next week.
Meanwhile, the National Human Right Commission, in a notice to both Bihar DGP and Vaishali Superintendent of Police (SP), has demanded a report on the incident in next four weeks.
