RJD Leader from Bhagalpur Gunned Down in Patna

Unidentified criminals in Phulwarisharif on Tuesday night showered bullets on the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader from Bhagalpur Pappu Khan, 40, killing him on the spot while seriously injuring his 32-year old brother-in-law Teepu.

As reported, Khan was going to his home in Harun Nagar in Phulwarisharif in an Indica car. He was accompanied by his brother-in-law when suddenly four criminals on two motorcycles pulled next to their car and opened several rounds of fire on them.

The criminals then, in their rush to escape the mob that had started to gather after hearing the gunshots, left one of their motorcycles at the crime scene and escaped on foot.

Khan who had twice contested elections from Nathnagar in Bhagalpur on RJD tickets was said to have a criminal antecedents, reports said.

He was taken to the Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His brother-in-law was taken to a private hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Senior police officials including Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kundan Krishnan, City DSP Anwar Hussain, sadar DSP Vivekanand rushed to Phulwarisharif to take stock of the situation which remains extremely tense.

RJD activists, shouting anti-police and anti-government slogans blocked the road for some time and damaged a private jeep while clashing with the security officials.

A motorcycle, a cell phone, a cap, and eight cartridge shells were recovered from the crime scene, the police said.

Condemning the incident, RJD MP Ram Kripal Yadav and Subhash Yadav demanded President's Rule in Bihar saying law and order had completely collapsed under the Nitish government.

RJD chief and Railway Minister and his wife and former Chief Minister of Bihar Rabri Devi also condemned the killing saying Khan was the victim of a well-executed plan hatched by RJD enemies.

Meanwhile, supporters and relatives of Khan clashed with the junior doctors at the hospital as a result of which the doctors went on a lighting strike demanding arrests of the perpetrators and enhanced security to them.
