Junior Doctors' Strike Called off

Patna: Sept. 19, 2007

Junior doctors at the Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH), nearly 24 hours after they went on a lightning strike following alleged harassment by the supporters of murdered Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Pappu Khan on Tuesday, returned to work on late Wednesday night following a talk between the doctors' representatives and the principal secretary of the Health Department.

At least two deaths were reported as the direct result of the strike while several patients had to pack their bags and leave for alternate health care facilities in the town in the absence of any medical services at the hospital, reports said.

The victims were identified as Runa Devi, wife of Naresh Paswan, and a baby in the Children's Ward.

The president of the Junior Doctors' Association (JDA) Dr. Anil Kumar Singh, after meeting with Health Secretary Deepak Kumar, agreed to call off the strike on the condition that the government would provide more security for the junior doctors and cases of family outrage against them would not be allowed to happen in future.
