High Court Admits Petition against Lalu's Acquittal in DA Case
Patna: Sept. 20, 2007
In a setback for the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, the Patna High Court, on Thursday, allowed a petition filed by the state government challenging the acquittal of Yadav and his wife and former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi in the disproportionate asset case.
The court will convene on September 24 to hear the petitioner's arguments.
As reported before, a special CBI court had acquitted the couple in the disproportionate asset case, an offshoot of multi-crore rupees fodder scam of the '90s, last December saying there was no proof that the Yadavs had acquired assets disproportionate to their known sources of income.
The court's verdict, however, was challenged by the ruling NDA government when last February it filed a petition in the Patna High Court demanding a retrial while accusing the CBI of succumbing to political pressures from the Congress-led UPA government at the Center.
Yadav was arrested in 2000 and spent nearly a month in the jail before he was granted a bail in the case. His wife, however, managed to avoid any jail time by obtaining a bail in the case.
