Patna Lawyers Boycott Court

Patna: Sept. 20, 2007

Lawyers in Patna, in the wake of the violence that erupted at Civil Court in the state capital today leaving one under-trial prisoner dead and three lawyers injured, boycotted the court for the rest of the day following an emergency meeting of the members of the Bihar State Bar Council.

Condemning the administration for failing to contain ever-growing crime in the state, the President of the Council and senior advocate Rajendra Prasad Singh said the lawyers will continue their boycott of the court on Friday and will ask the government to provide security for the lawyers in Patna.

Meanwhile, the three lawyers who received injuries in the bomb blasts in the court premises, walked away from the hospital saying their injuries were not life-threatening and they did not see any reason for them to remain there any longer.

The government, in the meantime, expressed grave concerns over the surge in criminal activities in Bihar including the recent lynching incident in Vaishali district, the killing of an RJD leader in Phulwarisharif last Tuesday, and attack on journalists outside Vishal Mega Mart in Patna on Monday.

Director General of Police (DGP) Ashish Ranjan Sinha has asked the Zonal IG and the IG (Law and Order) to submit a report on today's incident before deciding if departmental actions would be taken against certain police officials.

So far no one has been arrested in either Civil Court or Phulwari incidents.
