Senior Govt. Official in Purnia in Vigilance Net

Purnia: Sept. 30, 2007

Vigilance officials in Purnia on Sunday caught Naga Ram, the Regional Deputy Director of Education, while taking a bribe of Rs. 10,000 from Arvind Kumar, a clerk in the Education department, while also discovering assets amassed by Ram disproportionate to his known sources of income, officials in Patna said.

According to the report, Arvind Kumar had notified the Vigilance of Ram's demand for money to get him off the hook in a departmental investigation.

Kumar had already paid him Rs. 5,000 but Ram demanded an additional Rs. 10,000 after which Kumar sought the help of the Vigilance department, Vigilance Additional Director General Neelmani said.

In a sting operation, the police caught Ram red-handed as he accepted money from his victim.

The police then raided his house and seized Rs. 28,000 in cash, passbooks of several bank accounts, and a Maruti car.

The biggest shock came when the police found out that Ram also owned a movie theater 'Saraswati Talkies', Saraswati Marketing Complex, Saraswati Sadan, Saraswati Academ and an NGO to deal with the problem of alcoholism in Gopalganj.

Ram also owns some land in Purnia and a four-storied house in Jakkanpur in Patna.

The Vigilance will file a case of Disproportionate Asset (DA) case against Ram who is expected to be produced before a court on Monday.
