Lawyers in Bihar, on the third day of their strike against the state government for raising court fees, went on an indefinite strike after the Nitish administration refused to back off and re-evaluate its new legal fee scheme.
Members of various lawyers' group, irked by the government's refusal to consider their demands, blocked the Bailey Road outside Patna High Court bringing the traffic to a complete stop on Wednesday.
When the district officials tried to remove them to clear the road, the advocates from Patna High Court and Civil Court refused to budge forcing the authorities to arrest them.
After remaining in police custody for 4-5 hours, they however were allowed to go free at their own cognizance.
Senior advocate and president of the lawyers' association Rajendra Prasad Singh said the lawyers would continue to boycott court proceedings until their demands were fulfilled.
"We will decide our next course of action following our meeting on April 7," Singh said.
"The government has no clue about the power of the advocates. It would be in their interest to accept the lawyers' demands or it will end up paying a heavy price for it," said senior lawyer Shyama Prasad Mukherjee.
