JD-U, RJD Students Stage Dharna, Burn Effigy
Patna: April 2, 2008
The students' wing of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in Patna on Wednesday staged a dharna outside the Patna University office to protest against the university's failure to release the result of the written tests for the appointments of third and fourth grade employees.
Chanting anti-Vice Chancellor slogans, the RJD activists argued that the exams were held in January of 2005 but the university, even after three years, was yet to release the results of the test.
"This has caused tremendous hardship and inconvenience to a lot of people but neither the university nor the state government is concerned about their plight," said the outfit's state president Swadesh Kumar.
Attempts to enter the University by the protestors, however, were thwarted by the security officials.
Meanwhile, students with affiliation to Janata Dal (U) also took out a rally outside the Patna University office on Wednesday and burnt the effigy of Central Human Resources Minister Arjun Singh for continuing to dilly-dallying on the issue of giving the Central University status to Patna University and raising the cost of studying at India's premier technology institute Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).
"PU is the 7th oldest university in the nation and fulfils all the criteria required for attaining the Central University status. Until Patna University is given this stature, we will not relax and continue to build pressure on the Union Human Resources minister," said the JD-U students' wing state president Arvind Kumar Nishad.
