Angry CM Threatens Action against Government Contractor

Patna: April 3, 2008

A seething Nitish Kumar on Thursday lashed out at the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) for using third-grade materials in building drainage in Kankarbagh area after he personally visited the site and managed to break a brick in pieces with his bare hand.

"With such sub-standard materials, how long one can expect them to last?" the Chief Minister commented.

Kumar admitted shoddy materials were used to build the drainage in Kankarbagh resulting it in recent collapse just weeks after its completion.

"Such callousness will not be tolerated and if needed, we will file criminal case against the NBCC, the company responsible for building the drainage in this area," he said.

"We have had numerous complaints against the NBCC and we have ordered random checking of the qualitative aspect of their work. Pending this report, we will consider taking any action against the company," the Chief Minister said.

Kumar was accompanied by Road Construction Minister Nandkishore Yadav, Urban Development Minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Chief Secretary R. J. M. Pillai and a number of other senior bureaucrats.
