Contractor Arrested in Kankarbagh Drainage Irregularities
Patna: April 4, 2008
The police in Patna on Friday arrested Mokama contractor Gabudhan Singh for supplying sub-standard materials for the construction of drainage in Kankarbagh in Patna that collapsed just weeks after its building prompting a host of political flurries casting serious doubts on other development works undertaken by the Nitish government.
Singh, who was taken into the police custody a day after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar visited the drainage site on Thursday and admitted severe shortcomings in the qualitative aspect of the work, was sent to Beur Jail after police interrogation.
The police also filed criminal cases against another contractor Naveen Kumar and a handful of unidentified people who are said to be absconding following the arrest of Singh, officials said.
Officials of the National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) are also being contacted, authorities said adding criminal cases against them could not be ruled out if found of negligence.
As reported earlier, the Chief Minister who visited the drainage site near Chhatrapati Shivaji Park in Kankarbagh on Thursday was appalled by the poor quality of workmanship and inferior materials used in the construction.
