NBCC May Lose Contracts in Bihar; More Arrests Possible

Patna: April 5, 2008

A technical team of the Road Construction department on Saturday visited the site of the now-collapsed drainage channel in Kankarbagh area and collected samples of the materials used in its building following the arrest of one of the sub-contractors at the behest of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Officials from the National Building and Construction Corporation (NBCC), ultimately responsible for the construction of the drainage and other road works in Bihar, were also present during the collection of the samples.

Pending some lab tests, criminal charges against several engineers of the NBCC could be coming in a matter of days, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of police Amit Kumar said.

Meanwhile, the state government, after being embarrassed by the Kankarbagh debacle, has hinted on canceling other contracts earlier given to the NBCC while also promising to reconsider its decision to employ its services for major development works in Patna and Gaya.
