Son, House Help Killed Retired IAS Officer; Says Police

Patna: April 13, 2008

The police in Patna on Sunday claimed to have solved the mystery of the death of 75-year old retired IAS officer Vidyanand Mishra by charging his younger son Rahul Mihsra and the house servant Kameshwar for taking his life over dispute of personal properties.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amit Kumar said Rahul was afraid he would be denied the inheritance of his father's properties because of earlier family disputes and therefore decided to kill him with the help of his servant.

Both Rahul and Kameshwar had been in police custody since last Friday when some anonymous caller tipped off the Buddha Colony police of possible foul play in the retired officer's death.

The suspicion was confirmed following the autopsy result that confirmed finger marks on the victim's neck indicating possible strangulation as the cause of his death.

"Rahul and Kameshwar tried to hide their crime by refusing to take Mr. Mishra to the hospital and had it not been for the anonymous caller, we would have never known the real cause of Mr. Mishra's death," the SSP said.

Mishra, a 1972 batch IAS officer, was found dead in his room in a flat on Kavi Raman Path under Buddha Colony police station last Friday. He was reported to have been estranged from both of his sons for last few years. While the elder son Rohit Mishra lives in Mumbai, his younger son Rahul Mishra lived with his wife on the upper floor of the same flat where he lost his life in such tragic conditions.

Both Rahul and Kameshwar are expected to be sent to Beur Jail on Monday after being produced before a magistrate, officials said.
