VC, Teachers, Join Rally to Demand for Central Status for PU

In an unprecedented move to put pressure on the Central Government, senior teachers and staff of Patna University, including Vice Chancellor (VC) Shyam Lal, Pro VC Prof. I. A. Ehsan, four other former Pro VCs, Padmashree Award winners Dr. Gopal Prasad Singh, Dr. S. N. Arya, and Dr. Indu Bhushan Sinha marched on the streets of Patna to demand for Central University status for Patna University.

As the rally that began at Gandhi Maidan reached Patna Planetarium on Dak Bungalow Road, the police tried to stop the rally from proceeding further resulting in clash in which a professor and four students were slightly hurt.

When the procession reached R-Block, Sachchidanand Sinha, the Deputy Secretary of Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, met with the dissidents and accepted their memo on behalf of Modi while assuring them the Deputy Chief Minister would meet with them in a day or two.

Meanwhile, students under the banner of National Students' Union of India (NSUI) condemned the police attack on teachers, students, and other intellectuals who took part in the Wednesday rally and announced their decision to boycott Patna University on Thursday.

Besides hundreds of students, others who participated in Wednesday's rally included Prof. K. K. Jha, Prof. J. Thakur, Prof. Rajmani Prasad Singh, Prof. Niharnandan Prasad Singh, Dr. Vijay Prakash, Prof. Aslam Azaad, Prof. Usha Sahni, Prof. Ramjatan Sinha, Prof. and Patna University Teachers' Association (PUTA) president U. K. Sinha, PUTA general secretary Prof. Randhir Kumar Singh, Prof. A. K. P. Yadav, Vanijya Mahavidyalaya principal Dr. P. N. Sharma, and a number of Patna University employees and staff.
