8 Months after Kidnapping, Family Receives Ransom Note
Patna: April 21, 2008
In a dramatic development, eight months after 14-year old Akaash, a class VII student of Dayanand Anglo Vedic (DAV) School, was abducted by criminals under Shastri Nagar police station in Patna, the parents of the victim on Sunday received a ransom letter by the kidnappers demanding Rs. 10 lakh in exchange for the boy's freedom.
Yogendra Pandey, the boy's father, said he found the ransom note stuck on his front door on Sunday night.
Confirming the receipt of the letter, City Superintendent Anwar Hussain said the letter has given some hope to the family members as well as the law enforcement officials who had, despite frantic search for the boy, had failed to make any headway in the case.
Authorities are trying to establish the authenticity of the letter that would also determine the next move by the police and the family members.
Meanwhile, the state government has recommended a CBI investigation into the case.
"I am aware of the pain the family members of Akaash are going through but despite much efforts, the police could not trace the kidnappers or recover the boy," Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said.
