Patna: April 21, 2008
Over two dozen women engaged in the profession of flesh trade in Sitamarhi met with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar at his Janata Durbar in Patna on Monday and appealed to him to help them rehabilitate after their houses were recently burnt by a group of traders following a case of an alleged robbery.
"Our houses were burnt by men just because someone allegedly robbed them of Rs. 30,000. Now we have no place to go to and although we would like to get out of our wretched profession, we cannot do so without the assistance of the government," said the officials of an NGO named Parcham who brought the women to the Janata Durbar.
The Chief Minister summoned senior officials and ordered a full investigation into the arson incident and directed them to start proceedings towards the resettlement and rehabilitation of the women so they could also be part of the mainstream society and lead a life of dignity.
