Photo by Shashi Uttam19 young women who were in the remand home for running away and marrying men of their choice were set free by the Patna High Court on Tuesday as the court also ordered freedom of 15 other girls who had been in judicial custody on minor charges.

A division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Chandramauli Kumar Prasad and Justice Jainandan Singh ordered the release of 34 young women while also directing their in-laws to ensure no harm was done to them and the women were taken proper care so they could settle down with their husbands and raise their own family.

Court Directs Women in Remand Home to Join their Husbands. Photo by Shashi UttamThe women were brought to the court at 2:00 pm from the remand home in Gai Ghat in Patna. Their parents and in-laws were also summoned to appear in the court for the hearing.

After hearing the accounts of the women, most of them dressed as brides, the court ordered them released while sending nine girls back to the remand home for engaging in violent activities during their confinements.
