Earth Day Celebrated at A. N. College

College and the members of the NSS, in a joint effort in Patna on Tuesday, organized a poster-making contest to mark the Earth Day in an attempt to promote awareness about environmental problems and the threat it poses for the very existence of the planet.

The participants also formed a human chain and built models to promote use of solar power and ethanol gas to reduce greenhouse gas effects and damage to the ozone layer while also emphasizing the need for planting more trees to counter some of the ill-effects of steady modernization.

Highlighting the threat of global warming, AIDS expert Dr. Diwakar Tejaswi said the way the climate was changing because of massive melting of the glacier; it was a matter of great concerns for the very existence of the human race and other life forms on the planet earth.

Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kiran Ghai also talked about the need for planting more trees to counter the effects of global warming and massive shift in the climate. She also asked the students to vow to protect the earth to save the mankind that has been threatened by unfettered industrialization throughout the world.

A. N. College professor Dr. Ashok Kumar Ghosh, in his speech, talked about the need to save the Ganges from pollution. "If Patna has to be saved, we must first save the Ganges," said Dr. Ghosh.
