Patna: April 26, 2008

Shakeel Ahmed Honored by Party Youth Leaders. Photo by Shashi UttamCentral Minister Dr. Shakeel Ahmed, while attending a party meet organized by the Youth Congress at Sadaqat Ashram in Patna on Saturday, said that while the state governments were responsible for maintaining law and order in their states, the Center would not hesitate in stepping in if the situation became out of control.

Ahmed was talking specifically about attacks on Biharis in Maharashtra and some other states.

"The Center is not going to remain a moot spectator if attacks on Hindi-speaking people are not checked by the state governments," Ahmed said.

Explaining why the Congress had weakened in Bihar, Ahmed said his party, unlike other parties in Bihar, did not believe in caste-based politics resulting in it taking a back seat in the state politics.

State party president Sadanand Singh expressed his gratefulness to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for making Ahmed a Central Minister.

Sprinkling flower petals on the Union Minister, Youth Congress leader Ashok Chowdhary crowned Ahmed with a golden coronet as state Youth Congress general secretary Kumar Ashish managed the stage.
