The two months old strike of the college and university employees in Bihar finally came to an end on Thursday when the Patna High Court, after holding a hearing on the case, ordered the Chief Secretary to enforce agreement earlier reached between the employees and the government and restore academic environment at all colleges without further delay.
A division bench of the Patna High Court comprising Chief Justice Rajendra Mall Lodha and Justice Dr. Ravi Ranjan, while chastising both the government and the 30,000 plus striking employees, said the strike must be withdrawn within next 48 hours or else the court would be forced to take drastic measures against both parties.
Union leader Ganga Prasad Jha, later talking to the press reporters, confirmed the withdrawal of the strike saying the High Court directive has been sent to all nine universities and over 250 colleges under them, various labor organizations, and the government.
Classes are expected to resume on Monday, Jha said.
Earlier, various political organizations including the All India Students Association (AISA), Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and other groups took out rallies in the city, sat on hunger strike, and took out mock funeral of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar demanding an end to the strike.
