Nitish Asks Maharashtra CM to Check Violence against Biharis
Patna: February 6, 2008
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday held a telephonic talk with his Maharashtra counterpart Vilasrao Deshmukh and asked him to contain growing violence against North Indians in his state in the wake of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Raj Thackeray's highly inflammatory remarks against Biharis and Bihari traditions.
Kumar urged the Maharashtra CM to bring all those who were participating in perpetrating violence against the North Indians to justice by arresting them and filing criminal cases against them.
Meanwhile, Janata Dal – U national president Sharad Yadav, during a public address in Ara on Wednesday called Thackeray a 'loafer' who had no clue about the meaning of nationalism or democracy.
"He is running his mouth only to garner cheap publicity as part of his ill-conceived idea of grabbing power in Maharashtra. What is even more shocking is that the Congress-led UPA government is ignoring the whole Maharashtra vs. the rest of the North India as if it is not even happening," Yadav said.
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati who addressed a rally at Patna's Gandhi Maidan on Wednesday also lashed out at Thackeray calling his anti-North Indians tirade extremely foolish and callous.
"His statements are clearly against the Indian Constitution that does not in any shape or form restrict anyone from choosing a domicile of their own choice," Mayawati said.
Meanwhile, protests against Thackeray continued for the 6th day since the controversy erupted last week.
