Lapse in Intelligence Blamed for Attack on CM

Patna: February 10, 2008

State Home Secretary Afzal Amanullah on Sunday said the state intelligence department was to be blamed for the last Friday assault on Chief Minister Nitish Kumar during his trip with former President of India Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam to Nalanda district.

"While there is an ongoing investigation in the case, based on what we have learnt in our probe so far, it appears the intelligence failed to pick up on signs of trouble that was waiting in Nalanda district," Amanullah said while adding the guilty officers would be dealt with strictly so the incident is not repeated in the future.

The Chief Secretary on Sunday visited Pilkhi village in Nalanda district and held talks with a number of farmers who had to give up lands for the proposed Nalanda International University in the region.

As reported before, angry villagers in Pilkhi last Friday pelted Chief Minister Nitish Kumar with stones during his visit to the area with President Kalam to review the land acquired for the construction of the university.

Kumar was hit a few times in the head and had to be rushed to a hospital in Patna where the doctors performed a CT scan on him while ordering him complete rest after the Chief Minister complained of dizziness.

Two persons were arrested and 16 people were named accused in the case.
