Governor's Effigy Burnt
Patna: February 13, 2008
Samajwadi Party supporters in Patna on Wednesday burnt the effigy of Bihar Governor R. S. Gavai, a Maharashtrian by origin, at the Income Tax roundabout saying until the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) criminals were brought to justice, no Marathi would be allowed to put his or her feet in Bihar.
Demanding immediate removal of Gavai and imposition of President's Rule in Maharashtra and Assam, the agitators said Pratibha Patil, the President of India, who is scheduled to visit Bihar in next few days, would face hostile reception in the state.
"Atrocities are being committed on Biharis in full view of the Maharashtra administration, yet the Center is choosing to ignore the MNS crime on innocent citizens," the protestors said.
Later, a delegate of several legislators met with the Governor and asked him to intervene in Maharashtra matter.
The Governor did call the Maharashtra Chief Minister and Home Minister and asked him to provide security to Biharis in Maharashtra and take actions against MNS thugs.
"I am pained at the thought of mistreatment being meted out to our Bihari brothers in Maharashtra and I do not blame those who were burning my effigy in Patna," Gavai, who has earned high respect from the people of Bihar since becoming the Governor of the state, said.
