Life Term for Pappu Yadav, Rajan Tiwari and Anil Yadav
Patna: February 14, 2008
A special CBI court in Patna on Thursday awarded life imprisonments to former Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Pappu Yadav, former legislator Rajan Tiwari, and Anil Yadav for their roles in the 1998 killing of Communist Party of India (M) legislator Ajit Sarkar.
The court also ordered a fine of Rs. 10,000 each. Failure to pay the fine would lead to an extension of one year in the prison.
The verdict was delivered by the special CBI judge Virendra Mohan Srivastava after the court heard the closing statements from both defense and prosecuting lawyers.
While Pappu Yadav was sent back to Tihar Jail in New Delhi, both Tiwari and Anil Yadav were whisked away to their permanent home at Patna's Beur Jail.
Ajit Sarkar, the CPI-M legislator, was ambushed and gunned down by Yadav and his goons who also killed Sarkar's driver Harendra Sharma and a party activist Ashfaqul Rahman on June 14, 1998 in Purnia district.
The court, besides giving life imprisonment to Rajan Tiwari, also gave him 7 years of rigorous imprisonment in two other cases including attempted murder and Arms Act.
Earlier, Pappu Yadav was brought to Patna from Delhi by Sampoorna Kranti Express amidst very tight security. Carried in a wheel chair, Yadav, once a man with too much clout and arrogance who truly believed he could get away with murder, appeared broken and begging for mercy citing his failing health conditions and his young children while continuing to deny playing any role in the murder of Sarkar.
Showing no sign of remorse for the victims' families, the former don of Purnia and Madhepura said that he was a victim of a massive political conspiracy and needed leniency from the court for he was the only man in his family and his children needed him at home. Breaking into tears, Yadav said he needed to remain in Bihar so he could see his children and wife on a regular basis.
It may be recalled that Yadav was shifted to Delhi's maximum security Tihar Jail after he continued to flout jail rules in Bihar turning the prison into his own personal playground.
