Patna: February 26, 2008

Porters Welcome Lalu's Railway Budget. Photo by Shashi UttamCoolies at Patna Junction on Tuesday celebrated the sops handed over to them in the latest Railway Budget that clears the way for more than 3,000 porters who would now be treated as the 4th-grade railway employees thus making them eligible for benefits that are due to any government worker at that level.

Smearing each other with 'gulal', coolies congratulated each other as well as the Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav who, they said, had them left disappointed in the previous railway budget.

The Railway Minister's announcement concerning more openings for the gang-man's job in the railways was also greeted with much enthusiasm by the coolies.

"By announcing job openings for coolies for the job of gang-man, the Railway Minister has heard the voice of the coolies," said Kalika Yadav, the national general secretary of the All India Indian Railways Coolie Association.
