High Court Turns Down Bail Requests of Bhagalpur Riot Accused

Patna: January 4, 2008

A Patna High Court division bench comprising Justice Ghanshyam Prasad and Shyam Kishore on Friday rejected the bail plea of eleven accused in one of the worst communal riots in the state when several members of the minority community were killed at Lugai in Bhagalpur in 1989.

While Sukhdeo Mandal and Subhash Mandal were granted bails in the case, the court denied the requests for eleven other accused including Thakur Paswan, Ramchandra Singh, Ramdeo Mandal, Ajablal Mandal, Arjun Mandal, Naresh Mandal, Jaddu Mandal, Shivlal Mandal, Kuldip Mandal, and Suraj Mandal.

It may be recalled that the 13 men were awarded life imprisonment by a District and Session Judge in Bhagalpur last July for their roles in the carnage.
