Bihar Handicapped Development Forum at Patna College on Friday organized a seminar to mark the 199th birth anniversary of Louis Braille, the inventor of the Braille reading system, while demanding reservation, scholarship and education, and medical benefits for the blinds in the state.
Social Welfare Department director, in his address, said the government was considering the demands of the visually-impaired people in Bihar including allocating Rs. 5 crore for high-tech equipment designed to aid in conducting a number of common tasks for the blind people.
The program was inaugurated by Patna University Vice Chancellor Dr. Y. C. Simadri who said that problems with eyesight should not come in the way of education, jobs, and leading an otherwise normal life.
"They must not be denied rights that are ordinarily enjoyed by other people," the VC said.
Officials of the Pataliputra Rotary Club also distributed blankets among a number of blind people.
A similar event was organized at B. N. College in the presence of Building Construction Minister Monazir Hasan and the Rural Development Minister Baidyanath Mahto.
