Bihar Students Protest against Sonia, Dixit
Patna: January 5, 2008
The students' wing of the Janata Dal (U) in Patna on Saturday burnt the effigies of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit for imposing rules regarding carrying of identification cards and inability to use drivers' licenses issued in Bihar.
Hundreds of angry students chanting anti-Sonia and anti-Dixit slogans at Kargil Chowk accused the UPA government of acting irresponsibly and discriminating against people from Bihar.
"These impositions only confirm our belief that the UPA government is discriminatory towards Bihar and its people. However, we will take our agitation to New Delhi if these rules are not withdrawn soon," said JD-U Students' Wing national secretary Bhupendra Kumar.
Party leader and state secretary Rakesh Kumar Yadav also accused Gandhi and Dixit of conspiring against Biharis in an attempt to keep Bihar backward.
The new rules are expected to go in effect from January 15.
