Time to Rethink our Educational Policies; Says NCL Commissioner

Patna: January 9, 2008

National Council for Language commissioner Suresh A. Keshwani, at a press meet at the Soochna Bhawan in Patna on Wednesday, said that children today needed to be taught in their own mother tongues if they wanted to succeed in life.

"They start with a huge disadvantage when they are taught in language other than their mother tongues limiting them from reaching their potential. These factors later result in large number of uneducated and unskilled workers," said Keshwani adding nearly 80% children of the nation were the victim of such social injustice involving their native language.

Keshwani said that education was the way out of poverty and for that the primary schools in India should start rethinking their educational policies that not only benefit a handful of students but even those who are in minority in terms of regional and local language.

The Commissioner said that the Council was working very hard to provide justice to local Bihari languages including Bhojpuri, Maithili, Magahi, Santhali, Pali, and Urdu because these languages are not only the uniting forces of people across the state but they also represented the local culture and traditions.
