Nitish Kumar, during the birth anniversary celebration of the late Muslim leader Ghulam Sarwar at S. K. Memorial Hall in Patna on Thursday said that he was committed to bringing the minority community into the mainstream society and reiterated his idea of compensating the victims of Bhagalpur riots on the pattern of reparation given to the Sikh riot victims.
The event dubbed as the 'Urdu Day' and sponsored by the Ghulam Sarwar Himayati Front was attended by a number of prominent Muslim citizens who said Sarwar was a true champion of the minorities without being communal as some people would like to suggest.
The Chief Minister, without mentioning any names from the previous leadership in Bihar, said the leaders earlier were too busy strengthening their own political positions while ignoring the interests of the minorities. "All they did was pay lip service to backwards, dalits, and the minorities. We, on the other hand, have set a track record of putting the interests of such communities at the forefront that can be seen by all," Kumar said.
"Today world does not need those who are busy 'oiling their lathis', it is the age of education, knowledge, and good work ethics," he said.
Among those who also attended the event included Maulana Abdullah Bukhari, Kamal Ashraf, Prof. Sadan, and Taslim Jauhari.
