Anti-VC Dissidents Meet with the Governor
Patna: January 11, 2008
Student union leaders in Patna on Friday met with Governor R. S. Gavai and handed over yet another memo to him demanding the ouster of Patna University Vice Chancellor Dr. Y. C. Simadri accusing him of failing to hold students' union elections and squandering away money meant for the development of the university.
Activists under the banner of the Patna University Students Janata Dal – U said that while there had been marked improvement in the higher education in the state's premier university, the Vice Chancellor was increasingly acting like an autocrat by continuing to 'suppress the voice of the students and teachers'.
In their 13-point memo to the Governor who is also the Chancellor of all universities in Bihar, the students demanded holding of students' union elections without further delay, assurance to hold classes for a total of 180 days each year, implementation of sports and art quota in admission, a ban on private coaching by university teachers, adequate representation of students in the university senate, withdrawal of cases against several student leaders, among others.
A separate delegate of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) students' wing also met with the Governor and presented their own 8-point charter of demands including the removal of the Vice Chancellor.
