People in Patna on Monday celebrated Makar Sankranti by taking a dip in the Ganges, eating the traditional items including 'Chura', 'Dahi', 'Tilkut', and 'Khichri' while giving alms to poor and needy, a tradition continued by Bihar Governor R. S. Gavai who gave away blankets and sarees to poor women at the Mahavir Temple outside Patna Junction.

With some controversy over the actual date of Makar Sankranti, some people will also be celebrating the festival on Tuesday.

Several events were organized across Patna to mark Makar Sankranti including those at Tarumitra Ashram and Asaram Bapu Ashram. Radio Mirchi, on the other hand, staged a 'dahi-chura' eating contest in which a number of youths took part.

At Patna ghats, crowd started to swell early in the morning. By 10:00 am, there was hardly any place left at any ghat as police officials ensured everyone got in and got out with ease while preventing any tragedy from taking place.

Heavy crowd was also seen at all Shiv temples where devotees poured milk on Shiv's statues and fed poor and homeless.
