Body of Missing State Legislative Clerk Recovered; Two Arrested
Patna: January 14, 2008
The police in Patna on Monday recovered the body of Akhilesh Singh, the state legislative clerk who was reported kidnapped on January 4, from a well on Road Number 11 in Gardanibagh and arrested Braj Kishore Singh and Binod Singh - both employees at the state legislature.
The breakthrough in the case came after the victim's brother-in-law Vipin Singh filed a complaint against the two accused who, under intense police interrogation, admitted of killing Singh and led the law enforcement officials to the well in Gardanibagh from which the body was recovered.
Interestingly, the Gardanibagh police, a day after Akhilesh Singh went missing, had detained Binod Singh for questioning but allowed him to leave in the 'lack of any credible evidence'.
On Sunday, the family members approached Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kundan Krishnan and insisted on taking Binod Singh and his relative Braj Kishore Singh in custody for further questioning. This time, the two admitted of killing Akhilesh Singh and dumping his body in the well in Gardanibagh.
Binod Singh also admitted that he owed over Rs. 1.5 lakh to Akhilesh Singh and was unable to pay the loan back that led to his decision to eliminate him.
Singh was cremated on Monday after an autopsy was conducted on his body.
As reported before, Singh went missing on the night of January 4. His motorcycle was found near a pond on By Pass Road. A search of the pond had proved futile.
Besides working as a clerk in the state legislative council, the victim also was heavily involved in lending money at exorbitant interest rate with more than 10-12 lakh rupees floating among his borrowers, the police said.
