No Threat of Bird Flu Virus in Bihar
Patna: January 17, 2008
Veterinarians in Patna on Thursday gave a clean chit to the poultry sector after conducting tests on a number of randomly-selected chickens to look for strains of bird flu following a similar scare in West Bengal.
With the government directing the poultry industry to ensure utmost caution in processing chicken before it hits the market for consumer consumption, government veterinarians in Patna, after conducting tests on dozens of chicken, concluded that Bihar was under no threat of bird flu thanks to timely vaccination of the birds.
"This, however, does not mean that we would drop our guards against the deadly virus that has affected millions of people across the globe," said Bird Flu director and senior veterinarian Dr. Vashisht Ram on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the scare was powerful enough to drive the chicken market go south. At most popular chicken shops in Patna including on Station Road, Sabzi Bagh, and Arya Kumar Road, the owners complained of poor sales even as the sale of mutton rose substantially to accommodate the appetite of meat-lover.
