Patna to Emulate Indore-type Public Transportation System

Patna: January 18, 2008

Urban Development Minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey, after having returned from a visit to the metro Indore in Madhya Pradesh, said Patna would soon have transportation services similar to those in Indore and a team of Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials led by its Commissioner Rana Awadhesh would visit the city to give a final touch to the plan.

"Two years ago Indore introduced its 'Indore City Transport Service Limited' under which private companies operate the buses managed by the district administration who have established sophisticated computerized system to monitor the movement of all buses," Choubey said.

The scheme has dramatically turned around the way daily commuting operates in Indore where children, women, and elderly people make a large portion of the commuters, the Urban Development Minister said.

When asked about the narrow lanes of the state capital, Choubey said buses will only ply in areas that are easily accessible and have been pre-determined by the PMC.

"Rickshaws and other slow-moving vehicles will not be permitted to ply on these roads," Choubey said.
