Security Enhanced for Muharram
Patna: January 19, 2008
Tension prevailed in Anisabad in Patna on Saturday after unidentified anti-social elements burnt a Muharram flag sometime on late Friday night prompting the administration to beef up security in all areas predominantly inhabited by the members of the Muslim community.
Senior police officials have been monitoring the area closely to prevent any communal flare-up in the region.
Community leaders from both Hindu and Muslim groups were holding joint meetings to keep religious sentiments from prevailing over rationality and sound sense even as many Muslims staged rallies and dharnas and demanded arrests of the miscreants while also asking for security to them.
Meanwhile, the administration has stepped up security in 165 sensitive areas throughout the state. Armed police and CRPF jawans have been instructed to monitor all activities closely and deal with the troublemakers with an iron hand.
In a directive jointly issued by the District Magistrate (DM) Dr. B. Rajendra and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kundan Krishnan, law-enforcement officials have been asked to be on vigil throughout the Muharram observation particularly between 8:00 pm Saturday and Monday noon.
"Our goal is to maintain communal peace in all areas but we are prepared to deal with any contingency," the SSP said.
