Going… Going… Gone! PU VC Resigns
Patna: January 21, 2008
Patna University Vice Chancellor Dr. Y. C. Simadri, after weeks of criticism from both academic and political quarters, turned in his resignation on Monday which was accepted by Governor R. S. Gavai thus bringing an end to Simadri's 20 months of tenure marred with controversies and disapproval.
Dr. Simadri has been replaced by Zoological Department head Dr. M. P. Sinha until a new VC has been chosen by the Raj Bhawan.
The departure of Dr. Simadri, however, came as a no surprise to most as opposition against him was building from nearly the day he assumed charge of the Patna University. With his recent trip to France without the official nod of the Raj Bhawan did not help his cause either and only hastened his departure despite some last minute ditch by some students and teacher to save him from being removed.
Since taking charge of Patna University in the May of 2005, Simadri faced hostile reception from the teachers, non-teaching staff, and students for his hard-line stands on many issues earning him the title of an autocrat. His bold move to rid Patna University hostels from the criminal elements also did not play well with certain elements in the ruling an opposition parties. His decision to enforce punctuality in the classes and the university office denied the Babus of their freedom to goof around thus earning him their wrath. Finally, Simadri's reluctance to withdraw criminal cases against some students further sealed his fate and led to his resignation on Monday.
