LJP, RJD Burn the Effigy of CM on Kahalgaon Incident
Patna: January 22, 2008
Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) leaders in Patna on Tuesday staged a rally and burnt the effigy of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar at Income Tax roundabout to protest against the police firing in Kahalgaon in Bhagalpur district a week ago that left four persons dead.
Party activists said they would participate in the January 25 Bihar bandh called by all opposition parties and further intensify their agitation to demand the ouster of the Nitish government in rallies and protests to be organized throughout the state.
Mahesh Kumar, the leader of the Sports cell of the LJP, said that the party would help succeed the call for bandh on January 25 and a massive movement would be launched to remove the Nitish-led NDA government from power – a goal nurtured by both Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and LJP along with some other not-so-significant parties in Bihar like Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) since the day NDA came into power nearly two years ago.
A similar 'putla-dahan' event was organized by the students' wing of the RJD outside the Patna University gate.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has so far chosen to ignore such protests.
"These people know that the Center is responsible for poor power situation in Bihar but because of their lust for power, they are blaming me and my government as though during the RJD rule the state did not suffer from prolonged power cuts. If by burning my effigies would resolve the power condition in the state, I would be more than happy to provide them with more hays and kerosene to continue to do so," Kumar had earlier said.
