Kahalgaon SDO Denies Ordering Firing on Protestors

Patna: January 22, 2008

The SDO of Kahalgaon Satyendra Nath Srivastava, fighting to keep his job by forcing a withdrawal on his suspension in the aftermath of police firing in Kahalgaon, on Tuesday denied ordering firing on the protestors that resulted in four deaths.

With moral backing from the Bihar Administrative Service Association (BASA), Srivastava said he never ordered firing on the people who were protesting against poor power scenario in Bhagalpur district.

"Several police officers came to my house at 3:00 am last night to pressurize me into signing the firing document on a back date. Not only I refused to sign it, I informed the Chief Secretary and the Home Secretary of the arm-twisting tactics of some in the administration," Srivastava said.

Meanwhile, BASA General Secretary Vipin Kumar Sinha, in a letter to the Home Secretary, Chief Secretary, and the Director General of Police, confirmed Srivastava's assertion saying he never ordered firing either verbally or in writing and there was a concerted attempt to protect the District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police (SP) for failing to discharge their duties diligently.
