IIT - So Close You Could Almost Smell it

Patna: January 27, 2008

Officials at the Chief Minister's office in Patna on Sunday said Bihar was all set to get an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in 2008 and for that the Central Ministry of the Human Resources and Development (HRD) has asked the Bihar government to arrange for a temporary location so admission process could begin without further delay.

Reports said the state government has received letters from the HRD office asking the Nitish administration to select a temporary building where classes could begin this year while construction of a new campus begins in Patna.

As reported before, the state government has located 500 acres of land between Bihta and Koilwar where the IIT, Patna campus would be built.

Demand for an IIT in Bihar had been in the pipeline for several years now. However, it gained momentum only after the bifurcation of the state and the creation of Jharkhand that ended up inheriting some top schools and colleges including the BIT (Mesra) and the prestigious XLRI in Jamshedpur.

Hope for an Indian Institute of Management (IIM), however, still remains a distant dream as the HRD Ministry remains elusive about its establishment in Bihar despite the government's best attempts to convince it for the long-term interests of the students of Bihar.
