No Need to Retry Lalu, Rabri: Ram Jethmalani
Patna: January 28, 2008
Senior Supreme Court lawyer Ram Jethmalani defending the Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav and his wife Rabri Devi in the reopening of the disproportionate assets case against them, on Monday, said the exoneration of the Yadavs by an earlier CBI court was justified and there was no reason to retry them again.
"Based on all the evidences we have, it is clear that the state is asking for a retrial of Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri in the disproportionate case due to political animosity. There is no validity to the appeal and should be dismissed by the court immediately," Jethmalani made the case for the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president and former Chief Minister of Bihar.
The Yadavs were earlier acquitted by a CBI court headed by Muni Lal Paswan.
Citing a host of irregularities in the CBI trial, the NDA government in Bihar appealed the case in an attempt to retry the RJD leaders.
The next date of hearing has been set for February 14; the same day the prosecution is expected to counter the arguments made by Jethmalani.
