Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, at Sri Krishna Memorial Hall in Patna on Wednesday, inaugurated a vocational training program dubbed 'Hunur' to provide free education and training to over 12,000 Muslim girls in the state.
Under this scheme, girls will be offered courses in the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) in jute production, sewing, child care, health and beauty care, introduction to computers, and a few other areas that would help prepare the young girls in finding a vocation of their interests.
The Chief Minister, describing the scheme a first of its kind in the nation, also announced the government's decision to provide free bicycles, dresses, books, and other tools, including sewing machines, to the students.
"Without the emancipation of the Muslim girls, Bihar cannot develop completely. They had been an ignored lot for much too long and it is about time something is done for their welfare," Kumar said adding more than 12,000 girls would be able to take advantage of this scheme while next year, this number would go up to 50,000.
