PU Employees, Government Talk Breaks Down; Strike to Continue

Patna: July 15, 2008

Talk between the state government and the striking Patna University (PU) employees on Tuesday broke down after the employees turned down the state Human Resources and Development Minister Harinarayan Singh's offer insisting unless an official proclamation of the agreement of their demands were issued, strike at PU would not be withdrawn.

Singh, during the meet, agreed to meet 10 of their 11 demands saying he would present their case before the Chief Minister provided they withdrew their nearly three-week long strike.

Insisting no compromise was attainable unless their demands were met in totality and an official notification to that effect was issued by the government, strike would go on, PU union leader Ganga Prasad Jha said.

Barring any positive development between now and this Friday, the union members would observe a 'Betrayal Day' on July 18 and protest outside the State Assembly on July 29, Jha said.
